From the Other Sideline – Arkansas

Flint Harris (@Flint_HolyTurf) is an Arkansas graduate that used to run and write for HolyTurf.com, a site all about the passion of college football, specifically the SEC and Big 12. Flint has been a staple of the Arkansas-themed Other Sidelines, and he’s never given me a reason to not invite him back. Flint is understandably a little down this year, so let’s be nice to him.

1. What is an Arkansas fan’s first thoughts of Auburn football right now?

The first thought is oh great, another team that is going to beat us with better players and better coaches.

2. Have you set up a GoFundMe to help with Bert’s buyout. I can help you set one up if needed.

I don’t believe fans delight in Bret’s failure. He and his wife are liked by the community. Other fan bases may not love the guy, but he ingratiated himself to Fayetteville. With Petrino it was more of yes, he is a total jerk, but he is our jerk. It’s not like that with Bret. That being said, the fan base is ready for a new face of the program.

3. When did Arkansas sign the Mountain from Game of Thrones to play quarterback? What’s this guy’s deal?

Ha…some people call him Fat Ryan Mallett. Either way, Cole Kelley is a large human at 6’7” and 270lbs. A large Cajun human at that. He’s from Lafayette. The scuttlebutt around the program is how enamored Bret and his staff are with Kelley, and have been for some time. Maybe Kelley’s body type lends itself to extra adoration.

The fan base is tired of Allen QBs. Brandon had two and half rough seasons and a fantastic finish to his senior year. Austin has had a few bright spots, but has really struggled this year.

4. Name two current Auburn Tigers that scare you and why.

Aren’t Pettway and Johnson the easy answer? Jeff Holland and his five sacks in four SEC games is dangerous. Our offensive line is closer to a great Sun Belt Line than an average SEC line.

5. Name two Razorbacks that should Auburn fans should keep their eye on.

True freshman WR #10 Jordan Jones is getting more and more touches on jet sweeps and passes. He has legit speed and caught a touchdown at Alabama last week despite getting crunched by three Tide defenders. LB #23 Dre Greenlaw is active and can cause havoc for opposing offenses at times.

6. Where will each team have an advantage over the other?

Arkansas has an advantage because the Hogs are at home and the temperature maybe be chilly in the 60’s at kickoff….better do some extra stretching Tigers! As for a real advantage, our deep snapper hasn’t missed a snap all year!!! The pessimism is alive and well in Fayetteville.

Do keep an eye out for WR Jonathan Nance #7 because he is liable to get behind the defense on a play-action pass and do something good. Cole Kelley has impressive arm strength. Auburn will advantages all of the field. We shall see how the old adage plays out: I’d rather get blown out than lose a close one. The Hogs got blown out, and Auburn lost a close one. Will either or both respond positively?

7. Which matchup intrigues you the most and why?

The Hogs give up 5 yards a carry on the ground. Seems like three straight runs would always result in a first down for Auburn especially after rushing for 1,253 yards last year against Arkansas. The aforementioned Arkansas offense live needs to play better or risk becoming a pass only offense.

8. What’s your prediction/analysis for the game?

This seems like the last stand for Custer, err Bret, so we will see if he still has the locker room. If Auburn gets up early, Arkansas is liable to lay down. However, if Arkansas keeps it close they may start to believe. You almost wonder is Gus will keep it close in hopes Bret keeps his job so Gus can keep pounding him. Or, does Gus know this is the end for Bret and punishes him all night long. Auburn wins big, 41-20.

9. Where will Auburn and Arkansas end up this season?

Arkansas will get the coveted ‘early start on recruiting’ because they won’t have bowl practice to worry about in December. Don’t you love it when coaches of losing teams spin that mess? Hogs are likely a 4-8 or 5-7 team. Auburn appears to be headed for 8-4, which causes me to pause and think how good Auburn may be, but still would have four losses.

10. What’s better than bacon?

New Year’s Bowl Games, top 10 recruiting classes, Heisman winners…there’s not a lot of things better than bacon.
