From the Other Sideline – Georgia

Cory Brinson from TheBlawgHouse.com is a college football writer and twitter personality (@TheBlawgHouse) that writes about Georgia football. Cory writes with an X’s and O’s perspective and, while a big Bulldog fan, still writes using the facts of the game, not opinions (his words). He’s a regular now, but you may remember 2011 when he was part of one of the most commented-on posts ever.

1. What is Georgia fan’s first thought of Auburn football at this exact moment?

I’d like to say a really tough football team with an amazingly innovative head coach that has a great offense. BUT, to be honest, like most everyone else in the college football world, many in the Bulldog Nation feel like Auburn is a good team that has literally been the luckiest team in college football history over the last two seasons. From The Prayer in Jordan-Hare to Kick-Six to just a few weeks ago against Ole Miss, Auburn has caught every break possible.

It was, however, absolutely hilariously ironic that the luckiest team in college football loses last week on two TERRIBLE fumbles in key situations – especially the infamous butt-snap.

2. What was it like to have a star player suspended for breaking rules after years of crying about Cam not being suspending for not breaking rules?

Excuse my French, but, pretty shitty. On one hand, Todd made a terrible decision and cost himself and his team, but, on the other, Georgia really had some young guys step up in his absence and really made them a better team. The worst is knowing that Todd was sitting for breaking a pretty archaic rule, while guys who have been accused of rape (Jameis Winston) and theft & weed (Nick Marshall) are being praised by ESPN. Todd may have made a mistake, but he doesn’t abuse women and never stole from his teammates.

3. I know Mark Richt is a good man, but if he ends another season with 3+ losses and no real championship, does he need to go?

Absolutely not. Georgia had some big recruiting misses and character issues with Todd Grantham at DC (hope you’re enjoying Trigga, by the way… have you all taught him to bat a ball down yet?) – but the bad seeds have been sent packing while the 2015 and 2016 classes are LOADED. Expectations for this year were between 8-4 and 9-3 before the season, so, actually, this team has over achieved in terms of expectations.

4. Do you have actual video footage of Todd Gurley walking on water or inventing the running back position?

You know, I don’t. However, I do have some nice stats:

YARDS PER CARRY:
Bo Jackson SR Year – 6.4
Todd Gurley JR Year – 8.2

CAREER TDS:
Bo Jackson in 4 Years – 45
Todd Gurley in 3 Years – 41

KICK RETURN TDS:
Bo Jackson in 4 Years – 0
Todd Gurley in 3 Years – 2

CAREER PASSING:
Bo Jackson – 0/1 0 Yards
Todd Gurley – 1/1 50 Yards

Todd may not walk on water, but he’ll run right past Bo’s career TD total in just 3 years – and don’t you guys have a statue of him or something??

5. Where will each team have an advantage over the other?

I think it will be strength vs. weakness on both sides in that Auburn’s offense definitely has the edge over Georgia’s defense and Georgia’s offense has the edge over Auburn’s defense. The return game for Georgia, however, is an X-factor that might play big in the field position battle. Georgia is one of the most efficient teams in terms of yardage and scoring, so a big return game will help in finding success against Auburn.

But, I will say, Auburn definitely will have the edge in terms of years behind bars, which will be an edge if Auburn begins throwing punches again.

6. Name two Dawgs that have been surprisingly good this year.

The biggest one has to be DB Damian Swann. He’s the only senior in Jeremy Pruitt’s defensive backfield and he’s had an All-SEC type season. The reason it is a surprise is because of how bad he looked last year in Grantham’s system. Swann spent the summer and fall buying into Pruitt’s system and has become a leader on defense.

On the other side of the ball, you have have to look at Georgia’s freshmen RBs in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Nick has done an amazing job during Todd’s suspension, but, Sony is a game changing type back. Those two are going to be special for Georgia.

7. Which two Tigers scare you the most?

The biggest threat is obviously Nick Marshall – not only for his playmaking abilities, but Georgia will definitely have extra security around its locker room in case Nick wants to fall back into his old habits. I doubt he’s really learned to read yet since he enrolled at Auburn, so hopefully Auburn will have someone guiding him to the right locker room.

The other is Cameron Artis-Payne. He’s been a surprisingly effective running back – especially for a guy who can apply for AARP in just a few years.

8. What is your analysis/score prediction for the game?

I don’t really get into predictions, but this game is going to be as exciting as every other Georgia vs. Auburn game in the past (maybe sans that 2011 45-7 game or 2012 38-0 game). The atmosphere is going to be absolutely electric with it being a night game Between the Hedges and I expect both teams showing up with everything that is on the line.

9. Where will Auburn and Georgia end up this season?

With the way this season is going, who knows?! Georgia is playing for its life and trying to get to Atlanta while Auburn is trying to keep pace with Mississippi State and Alabama. We’ll know a lot more after Saturday night as to who still is playing for something big and who is settling for another year at a mid-tier Florida bowl.

10. Was last year’s game the worst thing you’ve ever witnessed as a Georgia fan?

It was rough… but, I’ll say this, I’ve never witnessed a Georgia loss due to a butt-snap.

The ball didn’t hit his butt. I don’t know why people keep saying that. It hit Nick Marshall’s leg. We don’t run plays under center unless we’re in the victory formation.

AU_AdamDimon 11/12/2014 at 3:42 pm

I didn’t think so at first either. If you watch the angle of that fumble from behind, it hit him in the butt.

Reply
Neal 11/12/2014 at 4:08 pm

No. It didn’t. The angle from behind is deceptive because Nick’s leg is in the way and the ball hit Nick’s right knee. You can see Dismukes butt shake because he hits it with his hand. Watch it from the sideline angle and it’s pretty obvious.

Here’s the video:

Watch Nick’s right hand at the 7 second mark. (This is like the Zapruder film. Back, and to the left….back and to the left….). It’s hits off his hand and bounces forward.

Now this was a funny back and forth. He had some pretty decent comebacks. Still, though, it’s obvious the guy is still uptight about that whole miracle catch. It’s ok, buddy, sometimes bad things happen to AU too! Here’s to hoping AU wins on an even luckier bounce Saturday night and makes him all cranky again for next year’s battle so he’ll have his bitterness to keep him warm this winter.

Gurley and the Frosh are top notch, but your defense sucks just as bad as AU’s “defense”. Just ask UF. It’ll be a track meet, but Nick can at least complete a forward pass downfield every now and then, something UGA’s QB is still learning to do. I’ll take AU and the over.

“but Nick can at least complete a forward pass downfield every now and then, something UGA’s QB is still learning to do.”

Umm…

NICK MARSHALL PASSING STATS:
114/187 for 1576 yards (61.0%) 14 TDs 4 INTs

HUTSON MASON PASSING STATS:
140/ 203 for 1515 yards (69.0%) 15 TDs 3 INTs

Reply
David 11/12/2014 at 4:57 pm

I stand corrected. Mason’s stats are much better than I thought. (Honestly hadn’t been able to watch him after his first few games, so obviously he’s improved.)

It’s gonna be a good game…but I’m still taking AU and the over!

dIZZ 11/13/2014 at 9:47 am

Where are Hutsons rushing stats wise guy? Because for a true pocket QB he could be the worst in the entire nation. All the criticism that Nick gets for not being a passer and you whip out stats for Hutson Mason (a TRUE Pro Style drop back QB) that are on par with Nick…But he has no other game to play…If he cant throw he gets sacked like a school girl. I hope you have to watch AU beat Thuga by a last second kneel down fumbled away by Mason that gives AU the last second FG. Thanks

I like how he continually deflected each question. I’m glad that idiot’s village is Athens. He seems to forget that Murray got a gift with that touchdown that kept them in the game last year. With the correct call, the “lucky catch” would have never happened. How many top 10 recruiting classes does it take before Georgia fans realize they are chronic under achievers?

How many poor to avg seasons do you all have to go through to learn one simple fact…. As long as MR is the coach…you will always fall drastically short of the potential that your players talent level speaks to.

Ga fans….happy with mediocre and actually laud themselves about jus how medicore they are. ANd all this in the midst of one of the more dominant runs in AU-Thuga rivalry…Yall can beat AU and still not win a damn thing. And just think Lose to AU Sat night and you all could send MIZZOU to 2 straight SEC title games……So is Mizzou now part of the big 6 in the SEC…Not thuga??

So I went with AWWWWBURN. Haha! You know, like AWWWW BURN. It’s like AWWW cause it’s kind of country like ALLBARN, but it’s also AWWW because it’s AWWWW aren’t you just a cute Auburn fan. Why don’t you ever interview this UGA blogger? http://blutarsky.wordpress.com/

You pick the douchiest UGA blogger because, I guess, you need someone to equal you in douche-baggedness. But Blutarsky’s blog is probably a little too high brow for you. He does more than standard cut and paste blog posts. It must take you weeks to come up with a prediction post, a preview post, and an aftermath post. How creative!

These comments are ridiculous. How can you complain about sarcastic answers when the questions are full of sarcastic premises?

And hearing an Auburn fan say “I hope Auburn wins on an even luckier bounce” is possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever heard a sports fan say. David, just get a tape recorder and carry it around all day so that you can hear how you sound.

That’s a good idea Jeffy. That’s a good idea. I’m glad you felt I said the funniest thing you’ve heard a sports fan say. Now you’ll have something to talk about in your diary entry tonight. I make myself laugh a good bit, so it doesn’t surprise me. It would only make me laugh twice as much if I recorded it. Hold on, I gotta stop talking so I can find my tape recorder. The only problem there is I haven’t owned one since about 1984. Maybe I can borrow yours?

Cory’s X’s and O’s of the game are the most insightful i’ve seen from any one, ever. You Auburn fans obviously can’t take a joke, ask Nick Marshall about taking stuff. He should help you guys stop being so butthurt. And before you guys bring up last year, remember, the we have dominated y’all as of the last 8 years. Well that is if you think 6-2 is domination, maybe not. Good day barners.

Reply
dIZZ 11/13/2014 at 9:58 am

Complete domination with only wins over poor AU teams to show for it…Not SEC titles…No National Titles and HELL not even one BCS title in all those years of OWNING AU. What that says is two fold..AU has truly sucked for 8 years to only have beaten the puppies 2…..And it must hurt even more that AU has 2 Title Game Apperances 2 SEC titles in the only 2 times we won. Oh and a caveat…..If ga beats AU its when we are a bad team…When we win…we win the SEC. LOL. Silly thuga fans that think 9-3 with a win over a 3 win AU team is AWESOME!

Holy crap, Jizz! You guys have been a bad team 54 times? Wow, that’s how many times UGA has beaten Auburn. I gave you more credit than that, though. Didn’t realize you sucked that often.

Also, you guys have beaten UGA 55 times, so you’ve won 55 SEC titles? That’s f’ing amazing, Jizz!

Do they even still play football in Athens? Has UGA been relevant in the big scheme of things in years? The answer to the first question should be no and the answer to the second question is no. Reason is they will lose 2-3 games a year that will take them out of championship consideration. UGA plays in the SEC east, excuse me while I laugh a little, come play with the big boys in the West and maybe we won’t laugh at those loses. Who has UGA lost to this year? Oh I know, I know…..UF and USC BAHAHAHA. I say keep Mark there forever!!! And hasn’t Gus taken some of ole Marky Mark’s talent and actually turned them into winners? Answer is yes. So message to recruits Mark will get you 9-10 wins a year, but never to the big stage. Gus will teach you to be a winner and at least in the national conversation. WAR EAGLE! Oh another thing I have some autographed Todd Gurley crap that I gave him $5 bucks to sign, isn’t that an NCAA violation?

UGA fans continue to be the most butthurt d-bags on the planet. Their bitterness at being such an underachieving non-contender choke artist team every year must have gotten the best of em.

“Luck” happens every week in college football. Sometimes it happens for Auburn…plenty of times it doesn’t. One play NEVER decides a game.

Reply
Joe 11/12/2014 at 10:55 pm

It’s official. Auburn fans say “butthurt” more than any other fan base on the planet. I don’t know what that means, but I can only assume that Auburn fans have a unique perspective on butt-hurtedness.

Reply
Chris 11/13/2014 at 3:38 am

Joe butthurt happens, say for example, when UGA got their butts bit by a gator down in Jacksonville or when UGA got their butts pecked by an angry chicken. Do you need an explanation of the term d-bag as well? Or underachieving? Or choke artists? Because I can come up with examples, like Aaron Murray is a underachieving, choke artist d-bag. That’s as simple of an example I can give that I thought how would understand, sorry.

Reply
David 11/13/2014 at 11:21 am

Who had high expectations for you? Heck, with your schedule, I’d expect your team should do well, new qb or not. You make it sound like the cupboard was left bare because you lost your QB to graduation and your “signature happy” running back was gone for that gauntlet of Vandy, Missou, Arkansas and Florida! Have any of those teams been ranked at any time this year?

Reply
Jack 11/13/2014 at 11:28 am

But I digress… How’d we cheat?

I mean name two programs in the west that are the annual power houses that are Vanderbilt and Kentucky, boy I’m sure glad Auburn doesn’t have to play those two conference games every year. I truly feel sorry for the UGA fan base, the poor little guys. But if they need to do a little Auburn bashing to feel better about themselves then let them do it, after all we all know what will happen on Saturday and what does a little talk hurt anyway? Maybe Jack if all of you UGA fans focused on your program maybe it would inspire your team to not constantly lose 3 games a year, or instead you can continue to focus on how many more titles, SEC and National, Auburn has over Georgia the last five years. After all isn’t that what it’s about Jack? Championships? Go troll the UGA blogs, or are they too mediocre for you as well?
