Tuesday Mailbag: Uniforms, Leaving Early, and Uniforms

Well, Christmas is over. It’s time to get back to it. I’ve been out of it the last few days with opening presents, drinking some nog, and making room for all of those new presents, but it feels good to get back to doing a little blogling. Auburn has a football game in four days, so yeah, I really need to get on this thing. Let’s do this mailbag.

George has inquired about Auburn wearing blue and Virginia wearing orange in the Chick-fil-A Bowl…

What do you think about the uniform situation for the Chick-fil-A Bowl? Will both teams wearing their home colors affect play during the game?

I like it and think it will look pretty cool. I can’t think of any other major football game that I’ve seen where neither team wore white or some light color, so I’m interested to see how it’s going to look.

I don’t think it will have that much of an affect on the game, but one thing that worries me is that Virginia will be wearing orange, which also happens to be the color of the non-contact jerseys that the Auburn quarterbacks wear in practice. Hopefully the Auburn defense doesn’t forget where they are for a split-second and pull up on a tackle. That may sound ridiculous, but do you remember how they tackled, or actually didn’t tackle, against Clemson?

Since you know I love some uniform talk, what if with the weird uniform situation, and with this being somewhat of a meaningless game, what if Auburn went full on blue from head to toe? Just throwing that out there…

Wendy is worried that Auburn will need a new one-hand catching, river-dancing tight end (in more ways than one) next year…

What are your thoughts on Lutzenkirchen considering going out for the draft?

For whatever reason, people have been really jumping on reports of Auburn players basically just saying they are going to take a look at their NFL options this year. Every junior who has had significant playing time or has been a major asset to their team is going to see if jumping early to the NFL would work out for them. They’d be idiots not to. That doesn’t mean they hate Auburn and they are absolutely going to get out of town early. It just means that they are going to see if someone would likely pay them millions of dollars next year.

That being said, I think Lutzie will definitely have an NFL career and I think he’s probably proven that by now. I just hope for Auburn’s sake that he doesn’t want to go out with a 8-5 or 7-6 season and comes back for one more year.

Garrett, like most of you, hated the uniform changes this year…

Any chance Auburn goes back to the 2010 uniform next year? I did not like the stripes on the pants or jerseys this year.

Auburn does have the final say in most of the uniform tweaks that Under Armour makes. However, it appeared that the minor modifications (smaller numbers, tiny names, tapered pants stripes) that almost every Auburn fan hated, were changes that were made across the board for all Under Armour teams. They were supposedly made to make uniforms lighter and to conform to new pattern styles, etc.

The only way I see this changing is if the complaints get loud enough. Hopefully Under Armour reads the comments on this post and was aware of the uproar on Twitter once Auburn fans saw the new uniforms. I hate these subtle changes as well, and would love to go back to the 2010 way of things. In fact, I’m blaming this year’s struggles on these changes. Yeah, that’s it. I’m blaming it on the uniforms.

Noone liked the uni-changes this year. Noone. But it wasn’t that Auburn and UnderArmour said let’s change it for the heck of it. Auburn is UA’s flag team, so when UA comes out with something new, we wear it. The smaller NOB (names on back), numbers, and the different pant stripes were all part of the new material and style UA put out. I don’t see this lasting long, one more year if anything, because UA will come out with a new stitching design for the pants, and hopefully, notice the jerseys really threw people for a loop.

My question would be, what are the chances that Mike Dyer won’t be back next year? That to me would be a bigger blow then losing coach Malzhan.

I liked the uniforms. Liked them a lot…except the smaller names. Hope they stay.
