2011/2012 Bowl Predictions – Week 1

Another year, another passing grade as far as my overall season average is concerned. Let’s hope I can say the same after this amazingly terrible bowl slate is done. I don’t understand people who complain about bowls like they are ruining college football. Just don’t watch them. The same caliber games, at least in this first week of games, are on par with what you’d see on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, and you don’t watch those. So don’t watch these. It’s just another football game.

For each prediction post during bowl season, I’ll start with Saturday’s games and go up until the following Friday. As mentioned earlier, the first week is pretty bad. But what’s better than no football on tv? Bad football on tv. Post your predictions in the comments below.

Bowl Season: 2-4
Regular Season: 85-26 (76.6%)
Overall: 87-30 (74.3%)

12/17

Gildan New Mexico Bowl (1 p.m. ESPN)
Temple vs. Wyoming – Seriously? SERIOUSLY?! This is what we start off bowl season with? A basketball school made famous by Bill Cosby and a team that purposely designed their colors and uniforms to look dingy and dirty like a cowpoke? All I know is that Temple has had one of their best years in their recent football history, but never doubt a cowboy in New Mexico.

Wyoming 34, Temple 17

Temple 37, Wyoming 15FAILURE

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (4:30 p.m. ESPN)
Ohio vs. Utah State -Mmmmmmmm…. this one just makes me hungry! Potato Bowl? Can I get some butter and cheese please?!?! Ok, I really am somewhat intrigued by this one, considering that Utah State is playing in it. I will obviously be pulling for them to win since that would make Auburn’s win over them look a little better. Won’t it? Please tell me it will.

Utah State 31, Ohio 10

Ohio 24, Utah State 23 FAILURE

R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl (8 p.m. ESPN)
San Diego State vs. Louisiana-Lafayette – The Ragin’ Cajuns made it to a bowl game? If that’s not a sign the end is nigh then I don’t know what is. San Diego State, one of the newest members of the Big East (?!) will travel to the capital of Cajun-land and will return to California….wait a minute…. San Diego State are the Aztecs. The Aztec calendar says the world will end in 2012. I already mentioned the end of the world in this prediction. It’s a sign! Oh wait, that was the Mayans. Bummer.

San Diego State 21, Louisiana-Lafayette 17

Louisiana-Lafayette 32, San Diego State 30 FAILURE

12/20

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl (7 p.m. ESPN)
Florida International vs. Marshall – Congratulations Florida International! You have your best season in your school’s history, and you get to travel four hours up the coast to St. Petersburg! Not only that, but you’re playing in a bowl named after some cow meat that belongs to a guy named Brady! What an honor!

Do teams that play Marshall feel bad for beating them? I know I would. I always pull for them to win, but they won’t win this one.

Florida International 28, Marshall 7

Marshall 20, Florida International 10 FAILURE

12/21

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl (7 p.m. ESPN)
TCU vs. Louisiana Tech – Well TCU kind of fell off didn’t they? They finished last season ranked #2 in the nation, and this year they’re playing Louisiana Tech in the Credit Union Bowl? And people want to say Auburn had a bad follow up season? At least we get unlimited chicken at our bowl. What do you get out there? Unlimited bail bonds? That might not actually be so bad…

TCU 41, Louisiana Tech 21

TCU 31, Louisiana Tech 24 SUCCESS!

12/22

MAACO Las Vegas Bowl (7 p.m. ESPN)
Arizona State vs. Boise State – Hey look, it’s teams that people who don’t follow college football might have actually heard of. This one is simple. Arizona State will be led by an interim coach and just hired the new job-hopper on the block. Boise State is still pretty good. Kellen Moore will throw for many touchdowns. So many, that his teeth might even throw one.

Boise State 48, Arizona State 31

Boise State 56, Arizona State 24 SUCCESS!
