Since Pat Sullivan will be returning to Auburn this weekend to coach his Samford Bulldogs, I had planned on doing a blogle containing a YouTube history of his time at Auburn. Unfortunately, Coach Sullivan doesn’t have much of a presence on the ‘Tube.
However, one video I found includes Sullivan doing some very awkward analysis of a few plays from the 1980 Auburn-Georgia game. It just so happens that this game is one of the three times that Auburn has reportedly worn orange jerseys in their history. I had seen pictures, but this is the first time I’ve seen any sort of video.
What do you think? Obviously today’s jerseys would be much tighter and cleaner than a jersey in 1980, but overall how do you think the orange looks with the uniform?

It looks red. Perhaps that is the poor video quality from 1980.
I’ve always wanted to see Auburn wear an orange jersey maybe once a season. As long as it still has the “traditional” look to it I’d be fine with it.
I think this darker orange is appropriate, but really, I think it looks better paired with navy pants. When you put it with the white pants and white helmet it isn’t Auburn (Tennessee?). If we’re going to have an orange jersey (ever so often…) it needs to be definite AUBURN burnt orange with navy pants. Or a navy helmet!
Pat was commenting because there was a chance his younger brother Joe (2nd string QB) might play. He did, but it didn’t help. We had James Brooks, but they had a big line and Herschel Walker.
Those Gawd-awful jerseys didn’t look any better live, let me tell you.
Does not look good at all. Makes us look like Clemson.
As Pat Dye said, Auburn’s colors are blue trimmed in orange, not orange trimmed in blue.
The orange does look red, but that seems to be a problem with how video cameras pick up the orange color. If you look at Auburn’s band when they march at half time wearing their orange coats, they look red on the stadium screen and on TV screens.
If done right, I’m all for an orange alternative jersey

The ORANGMEGEDDAN is pretty tight!! I like the idea of orange jersey’s with blue pants and helmets.
I’ve got one of those orange jerseys. It was pretty cool seeing them run out in them vs uga in ’78 for a 7 year old kid…me. However, they’re not burnt orange. They’re more a Tennesse orange. And that ain’t right.

That's probably due to the fact that people didn't really care as much about style and production back in 1978. Barfield probably told a student worker to order some orange jerseys and that was it. I am a hughe Auburn Fan. I have been dreaming there will be a day when Auburn once again will wear their traditional orange jerseys. Yes make them traditional exactly how they are in the clip. A comment above advocates them with navy pants. That is wrong. Auburn wears white pants with our stripe colors. We developed that as our tradition in the 50’s. I love Pat Dye but do not agree with him on orange alternate jerseys. They were brought back in the 70’s and 80’s because we wore them before the modern traditional style of the 50’s. When they were brought back they were modeled into traditional Auburn uniforms perfectly. numbers on shoulders. White main stripe on the sleves. because traditionally Orange has always been our main stripe color, and since we are wearing orange jerseys we alternate the stripe to white respectively. The white stripe is accompanied by 2 outside smaller Blue stripes. White numbers of course. Auburn wears white numbers on home uniforms. And thats what this jersey would be. an alt. home jersey worn with our traditional pants, our traditional helment and, preferbaly the white sox and white shoes. Pat Dye always did that. I LOVE that look. I’m glad Chiz brought it back, and I hope Gus continues it. Oh and please no outline on the orange jersey numbers. I was to young to remeber , but looking back I havte what Terry B. did to our uniforms.
Just for the record—Auburn has worn orange way more than three times. In the 30s, 40, and up until 1955 AU wore orange at least as often as we did blue. Following a game with Tulane where we wore orange, played badly, and lost, Shug Jordan’s teams never wore orange again.
Doug Barfield’s teams actually wore orange four times not three. The games were 78 UGA, 79 MSU, 80 USM and 80 UGA. Auburn hasn’t worn orange since
I was at this game and I remember the crowd going crazy when the players came out of the lockerroom wearing the orange, which they had changed into after warming up in blue.
