From the Other Sideline – Georgia (x2)

Greg Poole (@ecdawg_LHB) is the publisher/editor of the Leather Helmet Blog. “ecdawg” is a reclusive blogger whiling away his twilight years reminiscing about his enthusiastically misspent youth, whittling, fishing, tarot reading, drooling and plotting revolution. (He said that, not me. I don’t know anything about his misspent youth.)

“UGACory” (@TheBlawghouse) is the lead writer/editor of TheBlawgHouse.com (similar naming convention, huh?). He is also a husband, UGA Alum, and has coached Georgia H.S. football (QB’s, RB’s and Off. Coord.). Cory started The Blawg House to give football fans a more X’s and O’s approach to blogging than the typical shock-jock perspective.

1. What’s the first thing Georgia fans think of in regards to Auburn football?

Greg: I’m an old guy. I remember Shug Jordan – I saw Sullivan and Beasley play – but most UGA fans are younger than I and have grown up with Auburn’s astoundingly successful program of employment opportunities for athletes. Auburn should receive an award for its philanthropic efforts as well as its creative accounting.

Cory: Little sister. The schools are so similar in so many ways – Dawg Walk vs. Tiger Walk, Herschel vs. Bo, Dooley vs. Dye – there are just so many things that bind Georgia and Auburn together that they are almost related. However, in Georgia’s eyes, Auburn is the little sister in the family.

2. Is it true that Georgia has eye gouging and ankle twisting drills in practice?

Greg: Try to stay focused – you’re thinking of Florida.

Cory: You know I can’t confirm it, but I did hear Nick Fairley came in to teach that part of practice.

3. What do most UGA fans think of the uniform changes that Richt has allowed over the past few years? Will there be any this weekend?

Greg: Although we enjoyed the black jersey debut a few years ago (you may remember the event), most of my readers would be very happy if the Dawgs stuck with traditional uniforms. I don’t anticipate the need for any artificial motivators this weekend.

Cory: Ugh… it is almost ridiculous how much has been made over the uniform changes. The first change – the black jerseys – were special. It was an electric night against Auburn in 2007. However, since then, they have been the bane of Georgia’s existence. The consensus that I have heard is that fans would like to see our tradition uniform with the black jerseys mixed in every once in a while. This weekend, though, don’t expect any.

4. Georgia could possibly win the East this year, but would it actually save Richt’s job considering winning the East is comparable to winning the AHSAA 3A Region 2 title?

Greg: Your analogy suggests that Auburn’s program will be at an extremely low level after the Dawgs dismantle the remnants of last year’s well financed squad. The outcome should not be surprising considering The Plainsfolk are led by a tech guy, a high school coach and an Iowa State reject. I say one thing for Chizik, it did not take him long to fully utilize the existing recruiting enterprise.

Cory: Greg McGarity (Georgia’s AD) has said throughout the year that he will judge the season based on the complete body of work. McGarity knows what he is doing – if Mark Richt deserves to stay at the end of the year, he’ll stay – if not, he won’t. I think winning the East isn’t the only thing that will save his job.

5. Who are two generally unknown Bulldogs that Auburn fans should be on the lookout for?

Greg: DeAngelo Tyson (#94 6-2/306) and Abry Jones (#93 6-3/309) are the defensive ends in Coach Todd Grantham’s 3-4. Nose guards and linebackers has gotten most of the press this season but these two guys have done an excellent job of anchoring the line of scrimmage and freeing linebackers to make tackles.

Cory: I’ll give you one on each side of the ball… The first is freshman WR Chris Conley. Before the season, Conley was not seen as a guy who could contribute early. However, a couple of injuries led to Georgia needing the freshman WR for the Ole Miss game. Since that game, he has come on as a guy who the Dawgs can rely on. He had a 5 rec. for 126 yards and a TD last week and against Florida, he made a huge catch to seal the game for the Dawgs.

On the defensive side of the ball, ILB Alec Ogletree is a guy who you may not have heard about because he has been injured the majority of the year. He won the starting safety job last year, but for his sophomore season, Grantham wanted to move the playmaker inside and closer to the ball. In the Boise game, Alec broke his foot and was held out until Florida. Against Florida, he was all over the field and helped with the turnovers that assisted Georgia win the game. He is a playmaker, he is fast, he can cover, and he can hit.

6. What are the major concerns for Georgia in this game?

Greg: The offensive line is thin and has been the chief concern for Georgia all year. Any regression by the line will make for a long afternoon on offense. UGA will not be able to establish the run game without continued improvement across the line. Play action passes are the teams bread and butter and without a viable running game the passing game will be limited.

Cory: Obviously the main concern is dealing with Auburn’s high-tempo offense. Georgia has done a lot of no-huddle this year (actually has more plays per game than Auburn) and that will help, however, a game situation is completely different.

Another concern is can the Georgia offense get going. When Isaiah Crowell is in the game, Georgia is dynamic. They can run, they can throw, they can play-action – they are hard to stop. However, when he is not, Georgia becomes one-dimensional and predictable. The Georgia WR’s will need to continue to step up to help Murray when Crowell is not on the field.

7. Who do you see having a big game on either side of the ball on either team?

Greg: This season is about defense for Georgia. The linebackers (Jones and Ogletree in particular) as well as the DB’s will have a big day. However, their success will result from the unsung work of the defensive line.

Cory: I think it has to be Isaiah Crowell. He has been due for a big game lately and his suspension and the bye week a couple of weeks ago have allowed him to get healthy. He has battled nagging injuries and catching up to SEC speed, but the young freshman is electric. I think Auburn’s run defense is going to have their hands full.

8. What is your brief analysis/prediction for the game?

Greg: Georgia will hold Auburn to fewer than 20 points and will score more than 25. That’s the key for both teams – defense. Georgia’s is better.

Cory: You know, this year has been interesting. Georgia has been in battles with teams all year long, and it has to do with being in rivalry games week-in and week-out. Georgia has a rap for being weak because of their schedule, but, fundamentally, they are a much, much better team. The offense does not revolve around one player like last year and the defense is playing great. I expect this game to be just like every other game this year – a battle.

I think the difference has to be the defenses. Georgia’s will fall victim to Auburn’s offense during the game – it is bound to happen, but I think they hold them when they need to. Georgia’s offense has quietly had a pretty good year. I just think Georgia is going to stop Auburn a few more times than they can stop Georgia. Georgia-38 Auburn-27

9. Where do you see Auburn/Georgia ending up this season?

Greg: Georgia will be playing LSU in the SECCG. Auburn will be going to Columbus for the bright lights.

Cory: In my opinion, I see Georgia winning out, going to the SEC Championship Game, but losing to LSU. After the way this season started and the last two, a 10-3 record and going to the Capital One Bowl will be a great improvement.

I expect Auburn to end up 7-5 will losses coming from Georgia and Alabama to end the year. Auburn’s defense just hasn’t gelled completely this year, and I know the offense is starting to come together, but the Ole Miss game has to be more of a mirage than fact. Auburn ends up in one of the lower tier bowls – Music City/Liberty.

10. Lastly, I haven’t watched the Dawgs that much this season, but is Aaron Murray still crying?

Greg: Yes. Murray is overcome with emotion at the prospect of an outstanding finish to 2011 and prospect of continued success for the next two years. Here’s an idea. When recruiting future employees, Chizik and Company might want to look around for some guys who can magic enough classes to stick around for more than one year.

Cory: He might be… but his SEC leading TD’s and QB efficiency has wiped away any tears he has.

hey stupid… these guys respond to similar requests all year long with class and respect for the opponent. But when the opposing journalist *cough* represents himself the way this bafoon did he himself warrants no respect… which is why he got the answers he did. UGA never did eye gouge, that was Florida… and Murray never cried foul. In fact he said that Fairley’s illegal hit (that would have been a $75k NFL fine) actually felt good. If you think Murray was crying about it, then google Kirk Herbstreit’s rant about it, it’s on youtube. If you Meg can support and defend that play, then you have answered all of our questions about you and the Auburn fan base. Good day…

AU/UGA still has the potential to remain a “healthy” rivalry. The tongue in cheek give and take here shows that. Now, considering how UGly things got last year it remains to be seen how healthy this thing will remain.

Good grief, could the first guy be a bigger tool? Seriously? Unfortunately, he seems to be a pretty typical example of most UGA fans I’ve had the misfortune of encountering. Delusional about his own team, arrogant without much to back it up, and completely bitter over others’ success.

Gosh, it will be nice when we lay the wood to them on Saturday.

Oh, and our “tech guy, high school coach, and Iowa State reject” have a national championship in their case in their second year of work together. How many has Richt brought to Athens in 5 times that span? That’s what I thought. They have do have a ton of suspensions, arrests, and failed drug tests, though- -so they have that going for them.

JJ 11/10/2011 at 10:46 pm

Well it’s in the case for now. He’ll be giving it to Oregon in a few years. Just ask Joe Paterno, no matter how burred you think they are, Skeletons will always find a way out of the closet. Cam Newton was paid to play at Auburn, and everyone knows it. It will come out eventually, it’s just a matter of time.

Lucky for UGA that Lindsay Scott didn’t trip against the Gators in 1980 or else UGA could have put their whole winning tradition in a pamphlet!

Reply
W Heard 11/09/2011 at 7:10 pm

I think u need to back and read your history. A pamphlet really? Besides that all National championship teams have to have a little luck to win it all. Take AU for example. They were lucky they were able to bury the Newton pay for play so deep no one could dig up anything. We all know the NCAA shoulda dug a little deeper.

Reply
pip 11/09/2011 at 11:07 pm

NCAA has no problem digging deep and punishing people. “We all know” that. The documents are all available to the public. After reviewing them all, I’m curious which part of the investigation you thought could have been taken deeper and how?

Reply
Hal 11/10/2011 at 12:32 pm

brother if our winning tradition would fit in a pamphlet (btw kudos for being able to spell that), then I’d suppose Auburn’s would fit on a postcard? You’ve played less games and lost more, have a lower winning percentage, less bowls, less conference championships, and less teeth and no measurable class. UGA is the 8th winningest program in history whereas aubbie is the 13th. There is literally no place in any record book where even a dumbass like yourself can stack auburn up against UGA. You do have a slight two game advantage in our series, which will be cut in half on Saturday. And if not for your extremely high admission and academic standards you’d be twenty games behind us just like Florida was, auburn took Takeo Spikes when we wouldn’t admit him when he couldn’t even spell his own name for God’s sake lol…

Well seeing as how the personal foul count is in UGA’s favor the last 10 years, not sure exactly how Nick Fairley did anything new. As far as every Auburn fan you see looking like that, it doesn’t say anything about Auburn, but speaks very poorly about the area in which you live. If you live with white trash, you’re probably one of ’em.

Reply
W Heard 11/10/2011 at 5:21 am

Ummm don’t see many here. Unfortunately I have to deal with Gator and Nole fans. The place were I have seen this is in the Alabama town my cousin lives in. Maybe you have heard of it, Roanoke. It just a few miles from Auburn. From what I have seen on my travels up there you really need to watch out who u are calling white trash. Take a little ride around your state and get back with me.

Reply
AUChief 11/10/2011 at 10:16 am

There are more Bama and UGA fans in Roanoke than Auburn fans, even though it’s 35 minutes from campus. Also, it’s one of the most redneck towns in all of Alabama (no offense to anyone reading this from there, but you should know what I mean) so go figure you’d see some rednecks there.

I live in Auburn and I know some really nice, fine UGA fans that are great, classy, fun-to-be-around people, but I also see the worst UGA fans have to offer come into the store I work at day in and day out.

The thing that gets me is how you all seem blind to that fact that Mark Richt has taken your team down a very dark road as far as how his team conducts itself on and off the field. Nick Fairley? He was called for the dirty play in questions (I’m sure you think he was trying to take Murray out, but he was clearly blocked into Murray, from behind no less). Meanwhile UGA players were taunting (and not being called for it) the entire game, starting fights, and doing the same things they’ve been doing since Richt sold his soul to save his job in 2007.

I’ve never hated UGA. Last year’s game pushed me more in that direction that I’d ever thought I’d go, and the petulance many UGA “fans” have shown over Auburn’s success is pushing me further.

Exactly, right. Thank you, AU Chief.

Libby 11/10/2011 at 1:21 pm

Amen, AU Chief! My experiences with Georgia fans had always been a healthy but respectful rivalry. Once the game was over, everyone shook hands and went on with their lives for the next 364 days.

Until last year. The vile, bama-esque behavior that I saw and heard at the 2010 game and practically every day since then completely turned my opinion of these fans.

This Greg Poole person seems to embody all that is now the norm amongst the Dawgs (though I lived in Columbus for a while – that was sort of funny).

Thanks for including UGA Corey – he seems a little more like the old-fashioned rival-but-still-a-gentleman that the bulk of the dawg fan base seems to have lost.

Hal 11/10/2011 at 12:38 pm

supposing you’re the geek in your sign on… there is a big difference between personal fouls and plays that should have gotten Fairley ejected. You can try and quantify things anyway you want to, but you saw the tape and if you can try to justify the hit in Murray’s back where that thug took 2 or three steps after the ball flew and lowered his head into Aaron’s back… then you are everything we UGA fans have come to think of you as… I’m sure we’ll both have a couple PF calls Saturday, I just hope none of our guys does anything like that piece of trash did last year because unlike you classless bastards, we would be embarrassed.

Reply
lj 11/10/2011 at 2:27 pm

Fairley is a 300lb tackling machine…how would you expect him to stop that quickly? Even the CBS commentators thought it was a ridiculous call by the refs. And UGA should be somewhat embarrassed…I have co-workers in Atlanta that say on a regular basis that their degree form UGA is equivalent to a degree from Harvard…now THAT is embarrassing! And hilarious

Reply
Hal 11/10/2011 at 4:20 pm

you are a babbling bafoon. You’ve seen the replay over and over and you can not possibly expect anyone with any intelligence to think he didn’t mean to. He took 2 or 3 steps and buried his head into the small of Murray’s back- again I challenge you to google Herbstreit’s comments about it. And to deflect from that argument to the degree argument? Where the hell did that come from? If that were true Auburn wouldn’t rank behind UGA in grads average salary at entry and mid career… you third grade acting idiot… that sounded like “my dad can kick you dads ass”… lol

lj 11/10/2011 at 6:09 pm

Relax Hal…you, like other UGA grads, are comparing yourself to Auburn. I never compared you guys to Auburn in academics…I said they were delusional to compare it to a degree from Harvard, which many do on a regular basis. ANd the reason for the bringing up the academic aspect was b/c you pointed out what Auburn ought to be ashamed of so I threw out what Georgia should be ashamed of. Plain and simple. Be cool and chill out

As a UGA fan who has had the pleasure (and I truly mean that) of having lived in Alabama for a year I must say that I have found there to be a great deal of Auburn fans who seem to forget that no matter how much we love it, college football is still a game and in any game a certain amount of trash talk and “competitive banter” is part of the fun. So many times it seems that AU fans get so offended and fail to pick up on the “tongue in cheek” nature of comments such as the ones above. Let’s take Meg above for example. No Meg, UGA fans are not “talking crap” about AU because we have nothing good to say about UGA. It is because it is this kind of rivalry and back and forth that has made this rivalry one of the best and oldest in football. There are many things that I hate about Auburn as a UGA fan. The arrogance of the fans, the dirty play of Nick Fairley, the smugness that came along with the entire Cam Newton saga, as examples. However, at the end of the day I have nothing but the utmost respect for another of the SEC’s storied football programs, but for this week there will be plenty of trash talk from me. Do yourselves a favor Auburn fans and don’t take yourselves too seriously and lets keep this rivalry fun for both sides. (just a little more fun for UGA with a win Saturday between the hedges)

It’s funny that it’s “competitive banter” when Dawg fans do it, but “smugness” and ignorance (referring to Heard’s post) when Auburn fans trash talk back. Arrogance of fans? Take a look at your superior attitude when criticizing Fairley after the chop blocks by GA last year. The Cam Newton saga? How is that Auburn’s fault? We were accused, wrongly. We don’t take ourselves seriously. Most Auburn fans love the banter and teasing of fan bases. You guys have simply been pretty ” holier than thou” and whiny the last year.

Reply
Hal 11/10/2011 at 12:46 pm

it is competitive banner when someone says, “your offensive line can’t stop our defensive ends”; it’s smug and classless when a journalist asks if a member of the other team is still crying, insinuating something that never happened in the first place. Trash talk is fun, but in the last year, an entire fan base of which I used to have a ton of respect has refused to admit “yall are right, two of those 3 hits were pretty dirty and we as auburn fans wish he hadn’t done that”, instead opting to make fun of our players and our fans that voiced concerns over it. So if you want to know when, where and how this previously good ‘ol fun southern rivalry turned kind of ugly… you’ve nothing to do but look in the mirror. We’re not holier than thou, we just expect out of auburn the same as we’re happy to do. Case in point, last year our center Jones went after a guys knee from MSU. He was admonished by our coaching staff, suspended and wrote the guy from MSU an apology. What did Fairley do after Murray finally fell to all the late hits? He celebrated with the “belt” at mid-field and the other thug Trooper Taylor a coach no less comes for a high five, and you fans tell us to get over it. Grow up…

Blogle, I live in in Georgia, I live in Bulldog country and this game is almost as big as the Iron Bowl to me. I guess some Alabamians don’t really recognize it as much, I know they do though, but beating UGA is one of the best feelings. Lets get it done this year!

P.S. If UGA fans thought Nick Fairley got after Murray this year, just wait till they see LSU coming after his Jersey Shore wanna be behind! That’s if they make it….

and LOL @ UGA fans making jokes about Cam Newton. Yeah I get they’re jealous and all, but how many times have Georgia players been arrested in the past decade?

And A.J. Green had to sell his jersey last year because he wasn’t getting paid enough by UGA!

Holier than thou Georgia fans…they’re a dime a dozen. When your Bowden desciple starts actually disciplining players, then you can say something.

Crowell fails drug test before UF game, yet is suspended for the New Mexico St. game? Hmmm….

Wow so much for the friendly/brotherly rivalry. Honestly people the Fairley hit from behind on Murray was wrong. I was appalled and furious but the last hit of the game when he got hurt, Fairley was blocked into him. You do have YouTube in Georgia right? Are you going to tell me that in over 100 yrs UGA never got a flag for a late hit on an Auburn QB or a dirty personal foul call? I hate to see this rivalry sink to this level. I have always respected UGA and this rivalry. The Fairley hit was awful, the end of the game antics were awful, but it deeply saddens me to see this rivalry sink to this level. UGA is no paragon of virtue and neither is Auburn but the Deep Souths Oldest Rivalry deserves better than this.

I think it’s sad how many people take what a few fans say and apply them to all fans of a school. A few idiots from each school spat crap back and forth and then people say oh man all UGA fans are stupid or all UGA fans are arrogant pussies.

Don’t let the opinions of few be the example for the entire school.
Unless it’s the Jean shorts hicks in Florida, or the hoochies down in Baton Rouge.

lol… “little sister”… They do understand Auburn fans don’t feel the least bit like this is a “rivalry”? We have real rivalries here. It’s just the game before the game… be sure to have them back on Sunday to explain their way through the nonsense that fell out of their denial laden mouths.

Before biting on the troll bait or before doing a little trolling yourself, folks on both sides of this rivalry need to check out Chad Gibbs’ blog today. I’ve had to come back to it a couple of times after reading these comments.

@Foy – please, don’t inject the Chad Gibbs/God and Football/Tebow discussion into this. Trolls will be trolls, no reference to a blog post about Scripture will change their views. Most of the Finebaum callers are this way – they use God and Christ for their own deductive reasoning end only when he is convenient. However, when the HBO Special about Auburn was on – they all went out and paid extra for Hells Box Office. Auburn is a family. The Auburn creed talks about walking humbly with my God. I don’t need Chad Gibbs to tell me I have the moral superiority. I know UAT has the Sabanation Abomination and UGA has the Bulldawg Nation. That’s all you need to know.
