For the past five weeks, Aubie has taken on and taken down each of his opponents in the Capital One Mascot Challenge. Actually, Aubie has done nothing but be his normal awesome self, while the victories have come due to fan votes. This week, a scary little bumble bee backed by the brains of a “Tech” school stands in front of him.
When I checked the votes on Tuesday, Aubie had a nice lead of 3,000 or so. I figured it would be another easy win considering that the Georgia Tech fanbase hasn’t always been the most committed to their athletics. However, when I checked yesterday, Buzz had not only passed Aubie but he had a lead of around 40,000.
I immediately called shenanigans. When he didn’t answer, I put it together that Georgia Tech is a school full of programming, hacking, number crunching nerds that could have easily found a way to automate their votes.
I tweeted something to that effect and a few minutes later, a loyal follower sent me some links to a Georgia Tech message board, StinGTalk.com. That’s cute, the ‘GT’ stands for Georgia Tech. In one of the posts, a user named “gtcompscientist” (typical), laid out his plan to get around the system and bring pure evil to this world:

After reading through the official rules of the Capital One Mascot Challenge, I’m sure this is legal. So now Auburn fans, we have a choice. Do we take this lying down? Do we call and cancel our credit cards? Do we let this travesty occur? Or do we take what this “genius” did and use it against them since it’s technically not against the rules? One could argue that while it may have been pretty smart to figure this out, was it the smartest thing in the world to post it where other teams’ fans could do it, too? Doh!
The Auburn fanbase is vastly larger than that of Georgia Tech’s, and the deficit, which as of right now is 372,975, could be made up very quickly with these two approaches. I’m not telling you to do it, but I’m just gonna leave it right here in case you want to. If you would like to vote legally and morally, you can do so here.

Georgia Teach fans do not feel like they have to win this competition they just have fun fooling around with technology and seeing what they can do with it.
We are smart enough to do it without creating an app. But I don’t know if it is worth it. But again, I don’t think Buzz is the only one getting pumped up. I think it is widespread in that contest.

They send them to Auburn cause most of them wouldn’t be able to get into Tech. And turning off our electricity would not effect our ability to vote by phone. And shutting down the Metro Atlanta grid wouldn’t do crap to Tech cause we are engineers, we have generators.
We use to have our own nuclear power plant on campus, I think we can manage restoring it in the scenario that we lose power.

I don’t see how the second method is in any way dirty…
There’s no difference between doing the second method and using an iPad/iPhone/Android device to vote, especially if you’re using a fast wireless internet instead of a mobile network…
The first method is quite a lot more iffy, but it’s still not clearly denied by the rules unless you’re fully scheduling them. A lot of people seem to be using QuickSMS or the like, which just sends a block of so many texts at a time. Also, his method doesn’t make sense (I just checked) and Android phones will only let apps send 100 texts/hour.
If they’re using the 100/hr apps, they can only be getting 2400 per day per person. Since they got like 400,000 in one day, they’d have to have over 150 people pressing the send button every hour. More realistically, they probably have HUNDREDS of people pressing send every few hours, though, I guess…
But your headline is misleading. Saying “Georgia Tech” is cheating is very different than saying there are students at Georgia Tech who’re willing to cheat. I know people here are doing the same mess, and you even went as far as to request they did. This really isn’t the Auburn Way to do things.

I have been a Tech fan too, and many of my friends from home go there. Thankfully they’re not representative of the ugly side of the fan-base that I’ve been seeing this week and I hope to forget the things I’ve seen BOTH sides say to each other. Insults over a mascot challenge are just rude.

I agree with seeing the bashing on both sides, hence why I said “I hope to forget the things I’ve seen BOTH sides say to each other.” My two closest friends go to Tech (unrelated: they’re in band too!) and I know how hard they’ve worked and how much they love their school. It’s the same way here. I don’t want to bash anyone (except maybe Alabama) and I was just pointing out that it’s lame to make such a fuss over a mascot challenge. However this week is won, I have no doubt that it will be due to legitimate loyalty and support for their team and school.

Just saying, I am a member of stinGTalk from when my brother went there(GT) and vouched for me to get an account because I wanted to go there for the longest time (changed my mind after getting accepted though). And the posts on the stinGTalk are so much more “dirty” than anything I have seen about Tech. Jokes about Alabamans (even though many students are from out of state), cheating as well, being unintelligent, and even as far as making a joke about poisoning Toomer’s Corner. So I have seen the pictures of y’alls auto vote bots that are now taken down. You might not be cheating but fans on your side are without a doubt using non-human voting programs. Thus breaking the rules. And I am sure there is one for Aubie out there but not on our forums(that I have seen). So these accusations have backing ma’am.
Actually, the SMS autovoters are just as illegal. As such, we’re cheating just as badly. They just got more people in on the scam.
Georgia Tech also has a computer bot voting. Someone posted the link in their Class of 2015 Facebook page. Isn’t that kind of dirty?
Most definitely. But the clean voting fans are too blind to see it and say our accusations are unfounded.
If you look in the source, all it does is go to the mobile website and press refresh over and over. I really doubt that works.
Also, their implementation there is not really a bot. It doesn’t go out and autoclick a mess of times. It actually limits it to a human rate, if you look at it. It does less than the number of texts allowed per hour.
Also, since stinGTalk had the source, if someone wanted, we could copy their automater. But again, the thing’s a LOT slower than the Firefox/Safari methods posted about above.

It was mentioned that he had 5 scheduled to send every 5 minutes. This means he is sending 60/hr. (under the 100/hr limit of android) The scheduler is also the more likely choice over the “QuickSMS” thing you mentioned. You just have to schedule it and leave it alone.
Also, I agree with the fact that we should not be calling them out on this. It’s extremely obvious both sides are using these types of programs. Georgia Tech just has a larger number of people who participate in this practice.

I emailed Capital One. They said they try to take away all illegal votes. But it doesn’t look like they are making progress.

Perhaps the reason that Tech hasn’t had a meaningful season in as long as I can remember is that they care to much about promotional nonsense being sponsored by outside commercial interests. Of course if I was faced with the prospect of watching Tech playing football on Saturdays, I would probably look for as many distractions as I could as well.

While I think we can all agree their schedule is cream puffs and rainbows, they DID break Alabama’s long-standing record while playing Kansas. I think we can all similarly agree that making ‘Bama lose at things is awesome.

Tech has 5 SEC championships and left the SEC because of the blatant cheating put up by Alabama along with the relatively weak conference with absurdly low education standards. When we joined the ACC, it was because it had (and is finally starting to show) a lot of potential and some of the highest academics in the country. Similarly, the SEC has had rather more infractions against it, Auburn included. Fairley? Newton? Fulmer Cup rankings?
Georgia Tech got “busted” for “not cooperating with an investigation”, which they’ve pretty well proven to be the NCAA being butt-hurt over not finding anything wrong with Tech.
So total legitimate infractions for Tech? 1. In the early 1990’s. Auburn’s had a dozen in the past year. And that’s how the SEC rolls. The thugiversity of georgia, Alabammer, gamecrocks, and F.U.niversity are all the ones that “win” and they are the same ones that are known for blatant cheating nationwide.
Excluding myamee, the only thing ACC schools tend to have are academic violations.
But yeah, SEC wins a lot of football titles.
It is great that you talk about NCAA violations. Tech got hit. FSU was recently hit. UNC, and Miami are about to get completely devastated. Yeah, the ACC has a record there to be proud of.
@AUstudent: Correction: Some student made a “bot” (they actually made an executable .jar file, which isn’t a bot in any sense of the word).
The jar file simply goes to the “thanks for voting” mobile website screen and refreshes the page. Which doesn’t seem to vote (I tried it last hour, refreshing over 10,000 times that hour using a Firefox add-on).
Instead of whining, we need to realize they DO have a very technology-based fan base and they are willing to vote like crazy. What’s going on is implausibly human, not impossibly. And since we’re twice their size, we can use the mobile method described to catch up this weekend. It’s doable, it’s just gonna be hard!

Also, they posted the code to it. It says it’s voting, but it’s very iffy if it is at all. Changing the code to vote as quickly as possible, and swapping it for Aubie didn’t seem to make Aubie’s count change at all (with it voting like 10,000 times per hour) compared to how the votes had been rising.
The count changes in batches. You have to test over time.
It’s still running. Aubie is still falling farther behind.
probably cause they started using the bots earlier. . and the usage of their bots is probably spreading. At this point, it doesn’t matter what we do. Unless we get the entire student body running bots and sharing the links with all their friends.. It isn’t going to change anything.
I think a big part of it is that many of the people using “bots” (they aren’t bots) to vote for Buzz are at Auburn. The Aubie Facebook page has a bunch of links to a .jar file that votes for Buzz. I know people are downloading it.
It’s also Capital One going for the whole stupid American Idol ‘let everyone vote as many times as they want so we can brag how many millions of votes were cast’. If it really mattered, they’d allow one vote per IP or phone # and the average fan could probably manage to cast up to maybe 10 votes.
If there were enough people using these voter bots, it would actually be considered a DDoS attack.
We can get them back with their own medicine. This is the same thing they’re doing, but it votes for Aubie!

As someone who has some pretty close friends at Georgia Tech, I have to say you’re misrepresenting them fairly well. Which is pretty bad considering you’re also ruining one of their greatest traditions with George P. Burdell.
For me it is more of a technical challenge I want to figure out. If an internet vote is exploitable it will be exploited. It was only a matter of time. The reason their count increases so fast now is likely because the method has probably gone viral on the GT campus.
From some friends of mine over at Tech, the students are apparently really getting into voting. It’s very possible the autovote systems are being handed out, but it seems that they are mostly aware of the “Safari/Firefox” method, which is similar to the second method in the original post. Instead of clicking vote->vote, you can apparently click vote, then a back button (like backspace on the keyboard) so that you can vote almost 2 times per second with fast Internet.
Either way, we need a lot of momentum if we’re gonna try to come back.
The number of students voting is somewhere between 25 and 1000.

On-topic, this whole vote competition is silly. I’m disappointed that we’re stooping to such dishonorable levels to win something this trivial. (That’s not to say that it would be okay if it were actually important.) I hope we lose. That way at least we won’t have been the worst of the offenders.

stinGTalk made public a small used method of cheating on a PUBLIC site. Pointing them out and claiming they represent us is utterly embarrassing. It’s almost offensive. I implore you to STFU and go back to homework, which I can GUARANTEE (as a fellow student) you need to do.

You have no idea how the education is here, and I live close enough to have moved into GA and wouldn’t EVER in life put my kids in that crap-filled system. As a non-Georgia resident attending GT. I have to admit the Georgia public school systems aren’t the best. It doesn’t make any difference though. I’ve always respected Auburn for having some of the best fans in the SEC. Growing up watching SEC football, I went to many games from where I’m from, and Auburn has to have some of the best fans hands down. As he said, you guys also be u(sic)ga on a regular basis. That makes us extremely happy. Happy enough to forget all this mess. Go Jackets, and War Eagle.

I watch you guys all the time and typically cheer for Auburn on any given Sat (obv GT fan by name). That said, it’s pretty striking there’s so much of an uproar that we are “cheating.” It’s a contest that allows everyone to vote more than once!! How is it cheating to do just that? Y’all have 5x more votes than the 3rd place team. Yet we are the only ones who are “cheating.” If we are “cheating,” so are y’all. We are just better at it apparently. When you have 650k votes, and LSU and uga have a combined 50k, something is obviously up too. Let’s stop the cheating accusations, sack up, let the best mascot win, and we’ll see you boys/gals in the finals of the playoffs.
