Alabama Should Never Say Never

A few weeks after Auburn beat Oregon to win the National Championship, a picture surfaced from inside the Alabama locker room that stated “Never Again.” The new team motto was in reference to the collapse/comeback in last season’s Iron Bowl. “Never Again” would they let it happen. Now the Tide have a new saying with the word “never” in it as well.

Earlier this afternoon, a friend from my days at Auburn, who is now attending grad school behind enemy lines, sent me the picture below. The button, being sold at Alabama’s school bookstore, inexplicably states “Never All In.” I’m sorry, what? You’re not all in? You don’t care about the team you pull for? Is that what they are trying to say?

Your guess is as good as mine as to what that actually means. In fact, I was so confused that I called the bookstore myself. After taking a good five minutes to figure out if they had any left, which probably means they have been selling pretty well, I was told by someone who sounded like they were in this video that “apparently Auburn was all in, and we are NEVER all in.” Ok, now I really have no clue.

All I can gather is that in a futile attempt to take a jab at Auburn, Alabama is resorting to taking a phrase that Auburn uses and just add a “never” or “not” in there. Are we five years old? Glory, glory to not Auburn? Never to conquer? Don’t kick ’em in the butt, big blue?

I tweeted the picture out and it blew up immediately. For the next five or so hours, Auburn fans were laughing while scratching their heads trying to figure out what this whole thing actually meant. If you’re down with the Twitter lingo, a hashtag was created, #bamabuttonFAILS, where people put in their ideas of what buttons would come next. A few of my favorites were “All We Do is Not Win” and “What Do We Do.” Go read the rest. They will fill your day with enjoyment.

Plain and simple, it’s just stupid. First off, all day every day Auburn fans are told that our team is irrelevant and we are obsessed with trying to be as great as the University of Alabama. What this button proves, though, is that the high and mighty University seems to be obsessed with its “little brother.”

Oh you beat us last year? Yeah well…well…well…you’re a doodie head! It’s sad and just plain dumb at the same time.

The fact that anybody thought this was a good idea speaks volumes about what’s going on over there. I know this probably didn’t make it’s way across Saban’s desk or was put in front of the Board of Trustees, but it obviously had to go in front of someone with half a brain, right? I mean, this is almost up there with “Mississipi State.”

Never All In. You really got us guys. What’s next? Training an eagle to refuse to fly?

“Training an eagle NOT to fly”. I think I actually sprayed the monitor and keyboard with water on that one. Good one WB.

This about sums it up, doesn’t it? If they are so not threatened by the cow college down the road, then why even acknowledge AU’s existence with any talk, much less a button. They’ve become the crazy neighbor that you used to despise, but now you just feel sorry for him.

Maybe they can attach them to on of their “Got Fran?” or “Got Shula?” shirts. Its obvious that UAT has obsessions over coaches. Not the university, but the coaches. They could care less about UAT since most did not attend. Auburn on the otherhand, is forever instilled into us from the word go. We love the town, the people, the traditions and we support whoever the coach is. We respect the coach, but we dont go buy the exact hat or shirt that the staff wears weekly. Auburn has been around long before me and it will be around long after I am gone. Bammer fans attachment to their coaches is like a bipolar control freak girlfriend. Love you, hate you. Just win. Somehow tho, Saban has managed to stand at the podium and talk down to them and tell them how to act and what to say. Talk about slapped around like children? Saban owns you Bammer. He is bigger than UAT, He is bigger than you and your homeade pickles you send him through the walk of champions ( True story, btw). You love him until he drops the game to Auburn this year. Then what if he loses in BDS again? Pure madness. Sit back and enjoy. This is when Saban usually chokes.

University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa (UAT). Bammers hate it when you put the T in there as they think it is NOT needed. As a result it comes up a lot on AU discussion boards when the UAT haters jump in uninvited.

Reply
RMFT 09/01/2011 at 3:25 pm

We jump on it because it is WRONG. It’s just University of Alabama, NOT University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Plain and simple. Now other “University of Alabama” schools have their location in their name such as UAB and UAH. But that is part of the official school title to distinguish it from UA, and anyone who is dumb enough to not know that UA is in Tuscaloosa is an idiot.

roflmao. My point exactly.

Hey, I am not a hater. We’re just having fun. It’s a great rivalry without the hate and the disrespect and people calling each other stupid. Seriously. AL has two incredible football programs that consistently deliver the best college football in the country. Don’t take anything on this blog too seriously. WAR EAGLE!

A UGA fan I work with had a great retort to all this stuff.

What if somebody snuck onto their quad outside Denny Chimes and planted a few Tommer’s Oak saplings? It’s the opposite of their fan killing our tree, plus the added benefit of giving us something to roll when we beat them at BDS in 2012. Hilarious.

Look close in the bucket. One of the buttons on top reads “My Happy Place- Bryant Denny Stadium”. It doesn’t make sense either. Last Iron Bowl it was like a cemetery. Maybe that was an Auburn button that got painted the wrong color. We own that place.

It’s a lame button, but I think ultimately what they’re trying to do is make fun of the fact that Auburn has to come up with some gimmick marketing slogan for the fans every year…like Ole Miss or Mississippi State. (Do what we do, All In, AUdacity, AUsome, frAUds, etc.) Real shame that Auburn can’t think of any other adjectives or nouns with “AU” contained in them, by the way, but I guess even the wildest creativity has its bounds.

Perhaps if your fans had an attention span longer than Michael Dyer’s vocabulary or Eric Smith’s right uppercut, they wouldn’t need Nazi-esque propaganda to keep them on the same page throughout a season.

This post smacks of the ramblings of someone who seems a little butthurt because he just realized Barrett Trotter is going to be quarterbacking his team this year. Enjoy your trip to the Liberty Bowl while you wait the requisite 53 years for your next cheating-induced title.

Your gimmick campaign this year should be “We suck….So Grin and Barrett.”

Now, now. Don’t take down the entire UAT establishment just because of one enterprising Bammer with a bad button idea. I actually like it when they do this pointless stuff. The fans are easy prey, it’s the football team that I worry about. After being totally humiliated in their own crib after being spotted 24 points, Spanky and his gang are not going to be in a particularly pleasant mood when they come over to get pummeled again.

Osbert Snarf 08/24/2011 at 6:34 pm

“All In” is a poker term used when one throws all their money into the pot, as Auburn did when they paid Cam Newton to attend their university. Alabama would never play players, hence, “Never All In.”

Barners sure are retarded.

Reply
Brad 08/25/2011 at 2:20 am

It does ring a bell. So do the five years of probation and near death penalty. Auburn has yet to receive any punishment when the evidence is clearly there. Hope you enjoy the Reggie Bush/USC treatment in the near future, scumbags. Gloat while you can. ;)

But, but, Uncle Danny said he was told the name of the bagman and that he wasn’t sure that the information was credible. So HA, there’s your proof……..oh wait. And we would never blow a 24 point lead at home…crap, forgot about that too. BARNER, BARNER, BARNER!

* This is what I can only surmise as Bama logic after reading the boards all off-season.

Reply
LR4AU 08/24/2011 at 7:58 pm

Ok this is so silly. First Osbert where is the proof that NO ONE in the entire investigation of officials could find but yet you say it’s right there! Yeah right in your pea brain. Secondly what is a Barner? All in is a term not only used in Poker but in any effort where you hive everything you got to win. So if Bama says Never All In I would imagine that it means they are only partially in? Hmm. What beat Bama last year was pure heart and guts and a unified team behind a kid who showed class under pressure. And now he is going to do well in the NFL so deal with it and see ya on the field

Love the post, love the site. I along with several others that come here from time to time to watch the A96 videos were wondering if you (or other WB readers) know which songs were used in those videos. For instance, I know that “heart of courage” was used in the Clemson 2010 video, but there are many other really good ones I would love to know the name of. Help would be appreciated.

Our rivalry with bama has become absolutely toxic (literally!). It seems like since we won the NC it has sent all of them off the deep end. They can’t stand they had a great 2009 season with the NC and their first Heisman winner, and the very next year Auburn matches and tops their feat. They like to crow about their imagined 13 MNCs (check YOUR 1983 media guide, bammers) but continually obsess over what Auburn is doing. Why else are they on an Auburn blog? The main difference between a bammer and an AU fan: they love Bama FOOTBALL. Auburn fans love AUBURN.

Sorry, I thought you were asking about my comment. Ive heard many different things, but I think it’s in reference to the whole cam getting paid thing. Who knows? My point is the person who started this blog didnt know either and went off and started a BLOG hating Alabama right off the bat nor didnt even know if it was against auburn. The person totally contradicted what they were even blogging about by starting the blog.

Maybe I am just having a “slow” day but I am having a hard time understanding what you’re saying. A crimson pin that says “not all in” is in reference to the “Cam getting paid thing?” Could you explain even further because I’m not sure I get what that means? Okay, I am going to try my best to even slightly understand the second part of your comment. First of all, I am almost certain that it is in some way supposed to be in reference to Auburns “All In” saying. So even though nobody seems to know what it means, I think that much is certain. This entire blog is not dedicated to this silly pin story so I don’t get where you’re going with the “writer is stupid because he started a blog about this story” thing. I’m also confused about how he contradicted himself? ……..& I’m just toying with you. I know you don’t have any good answers, we just like to see how much silly stuff we can get you guys to say sometimes.

Ok. The button should say ALL OUT. You heard it here on an Auburn board. Take it and run like the wind. Go All Out. You owe me nothing. Have fun in the button business and I won’t tell anyone where you got the button from. Consider it a payback for “Tide for Toomer’s”. If we stopped hating on each other and morphed back into a healthy rivalry of respect, we can do great things together.
