Finebaum Likens Auburn Program to Ponzi Scheme

We all know how Paul Finebaum works. He has built his show around stirring the pot, creating controversy, and feeding off those that claim they’ll never listen to him again. You can listen one day and he’s all on the Nick Saban bandwagon, and the next day he’s bashing him and all about Chizik. This past Friday, I heard him switch back and forth from one caller to the next, so it’s no surprise as to what he’s doing. Most see it, but those that continue to call do not.

HOWEVER….

Last week, Finebaum spoke at Birmingham Southern College in front of a couple hundred students and faculty members. The lecture was called “Paul Finebaum: Sports Management.” Are you done laughing yet? No?…ok, what about now? Basically, he argued through innuendo and rhetorical questions to the audience that Alabama was a perfect machine, comparing them to Apple, etc. He then argued that Auburn could be compared to a Ponzi scheme. Some students (more Bama fans not attending Bama) threw out names like Enron, which he agreed with.

Next in his stand-up routine, he called Jay Jacobs a puppet to Bobby Lowder, and implied that Cam Newton had 180-thousand reasons to go to Auburn. Not to mention the only reason Auburn won a championship under Chizik so quickly was because they cut corners and cheated. Those are only a few of his ridiculous claims. They don’t even begin to scratch the surface of the rest of his innuendo and lies.

Now I know this may seem like nothing new. We’ve heard him say things like this on the radio for years, especially on a day when he notices not many Auburn fans are calling, but this is actually very different. He wasn’t on the radio with hundreds of thousands listening. He was in a small auditorium speaking to a few hundred students, with no knowledge of it being recorded for the outside world to hear. He wasn’t trying to stir the pot, he was telling them his true thoughts.

Some may say “Who cares? He’s just another hater.” And that’s true, but this hater is on ESPN weekly during football season and is for some reason known in Bristol, CT as the representative of the SEC. As long as he spouts out everything he told the students and faculty at Birmingham Southern, then the outside world will view everything that he says as fact. Like it or not, he is very influential, and he’s influencing anyone who wants any reason to believe Auburn cheated with his half-wit jokes and blatant lies.

Remember when I said he had no knowledge of it being recorded for the outside world to hear? You knew where I was going with that, right? Yep, one of my loyal readers was in that auditorium and knew that this needed to be heard. He only agreed to let me post it if I told you how awesome and sexy he was, so thank you Mr. Anonymous Awesome Sexy Guy. I commend you for not being in jail for multiple beatings after hearing what I have heard in your recording.

The whole lecture is around 40 minutes long, but you’ll want to hear every bit. Have at him.

I had to stop listening after 11 minutes because he was pissing me off. If Finebaum ever came to give a lecture to a group or class I was in, I would get up and walk out because this man is a moron.

His logic goes something like this: if you have a fast turnaround, then you must be cutting corners. Auburn had a fast turnaround. Therefore, Auburn is cutting corners. He didn’t mention this obvious stat. Alabama’s first three regular seasons under Saban: 6-6, 12-0, 12-0.

I was thinking the same thing the entire time I was listening. At least he pointed out the 25 years of failure bama had experienced prior to Saban’s arival.

25 years? ROFL… We won a NC in 1992, won 12 games in 1994, won the SEC again in 1999. C’mon…at least get your slams correct. You guys kill me. Yes…from 2000-2007 sucked. Hardly 25 years.

Roger That,

I’m guessing you’re too young to remember the Eric Ramsey case and the parts of it which were centered around Pat Dye’s ‘no interracial dating’ policies. That’s what you call racist.

I’m literate enough to know that a person who has been in Finebaum’s position for so many years isn’t just spouting off his mouth. He clearly knows some unsavory things have gone down in Opelika (and still are). though, he doesn’t seem to think it will be enough to retract AU football’s ill-gotten gains. Speaking of illiteracy; AU graduated a football player who was illiterate. Did you know?

The tree poisoning incident is shameful. However, the AU fans who attend games with a skeleton dressed as Coach Bryant and those AU fans who have desecrated his grave are equally shameful…probably more shameful since Bryant was a human and the Toomer’s Oaks are trees.

I’ve never humped a dog and I don’t have a sister.

What do you have against those who must perform manual labor for a living?

Keep lying, or just believing the lies, bammer. Racism is ingrained at your pathetic school, from celebrating Hitler’s birthday with swatstikas on the sidewalks, to intimidating black homecoming contestants and black SGA president candidates to referring to your very rare black QB by the “n” word as if that were their name. You cannot possibly be too young to remember that because every incident about had taken place in the last 10-11 years.

Unsavory is being on probation, which you are right now and have been for just about all of the last 17 years. Innuendo from the Jerry Springer of Alabama sport radio doesn’t count. If he has info, he needs to put it out there. He doesn’t, but he does have weak-minded, 2 digit IQed rednecks like you hanging on his every word. Look at your own program, no innuendo there; Julio and Ingram on cruises and fishing trips, Dareus and Ingram flying to big parties in DC and Miami, Jerrell Harris getting laptops and 16 of your sports under major NCAA infractions penalties right now.

That is called factual information, updyke. You have nothing, nothing but a dirty program and sycophantic talk show host who will say or do anything for Nicky and for ratings from the dirty mass of updykes known as the bammer nation.

Here you go, Roger That…

In 2001, the Beta Theta Pi fraternity of Auburn University was suspended for having a a Jim Crow party featuring blackface and lynching. It was a national story.

Unsavory is any team for which Trooper Taylor is employed. He will be the catalyst by which your university is – one again – placed alone atop the leader board for most NCAA penalties. I guess it’s coincidence that Trooper & Luper are constantly pointed to as Auburn’s connections to known street agents and those who admittedly have sought money for their services.

Julio & Ingram’s fishing trip was with a guy who just happens to be an Auburn supporter. Curtis Anderson owns Eagle Wholesale & Supply in Athens, AL…and it just happens that his business was incorporated in Lee County, AL. Curtis Anderson’s son is also a student (or was at the time) of the university of Auburn. It was also Curtis Anderson who purchased a laptop for Jerrell Harris. Why would a barner take such interest in 3 of Bama’s most high profile (at that time in 2008) recruits?

You want to discuss dirty programs? How about the Pat Dye, Bobby Lowder, Milton McGregor & Jimmy Raine pay-for-play scheme which was uncovered and discussed in an interview with Terry Bowden…want to discuss that? Those are factual instances of auburn cheating.

And…isn’t it interesting that your known money-man boosters and BoT members are currently under at least 2 separate federal investigations for which they are likely to serve serious prison time? I guess that’s just coincidence and has nothing to do with Auburn athletics. Only a few of the aforementioned people are known (proven) to have been part of pay-for-play at Auburn in the past.

Get your head out of the sand, son. If you love Auburn athletics, you will hope that these jackasses are removed from it and that their transgressions are brought to the surface…that way you Auburn fans can move forward with your heads held high.

I see, so by that you’re saying that the University of alabama is so much better than Auburn University? Because “It happened before(20 years ago) it must be true now. Well by using your standards does that mean that the Logan Young Machine is back in action at bama? Of course it is minus Mr. Youngs services since other bama fans found it necessary to have him “Rubbed” out. Probably to keep him from telling the rest of the story to the feds during his indictment. Funny how his stuff just happened to burn up. Now I’m not too sure if you’ve read the NCAA findings concerning the alabama program but it is quite interesting to say the least. Since it contains PROOF that bama was paying players to come to bama, paying players while at bama, and even taking cars back from student-athletes that left bama. Complete with student-athlete testimonies, Corruption in the alabama coaching staff, and phone records matching pay-offs times. The NCAA even went a step further and called alabama “the worst habitual violator in recent NCAA history”. Saying that they had “an abysmal track record of cheating”. ….Come on!

Sure Auburn has had its problems and yes Auburn has had 7 major infractions in the past 50 years which ranks 3rd all-time on the shameful list. However, to play like bama is somehow better is ridiculous. Especially considering that bama has had 4 major infractions in the last 17 years, but bama’s program is Soooooo much better than Auburn’s. I suppose we aren’t the only ones with our heads buried balls deep in the sand…Genius.

Roll Updyke Roll 03/17/2011 at 5:25 pm

Sure, Auburn has some racists in our midst. What we don’t have is The Machine which is not random racism. It’s a way of life in West Vance. There’s no websites dedicated to racism at Auburn University. You can find one about West Vance at welcometothemachine.info

Lots of FACTS there – piles of articles dating back to the early 1900s and most of them from your own student newspaper.

There are random racists at every university in the South and probably across the country. That’s not what the original poster was referring to and what you try to insinuate is an equal to your university. Unfortunately, that will just never be the case. The closest (and it was galaxies behind The Machine) thing Auburn ever had was the Old South Parade and it was disbanded in 1992. Go ahead and embelish your plantation mentality and don’t run from it.

One thing I’ll agree with you and disagree with Finebaum is that Auburn’s success on the field is not evidence that they cut corners. They had a veteran line, developed a phenomenal D-line (esp Fairley), some elite skills players, and the greatest dual threat QB in college history. Just like any national title team, their schedule lined up nicely, they got some breaks, and were the last man standing.

The suspicious thing is the sensational recruiting success and last minute, miraculous signees when the program was in the dumps.

Reply

A bad season (one bad season at that) and Auburn is in the dumps? Why does saban get a pass when bama had 2 consecutive bad seasons(your standards not mine) prior to and 1st season of his arrival to bama? Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t bama turn around and drop back-to-back #1 recruiting classes after those bad seasons followed by a #5 and then another concensus top 5 recruiting class. Complete with last second steals from 2 Auburn commits. Does that mean he is cheating? He has been known to push the envelope, right? “After five minutes, if you haven’t identified the sucker in the room, then you are the sucker.”

When everyone in the room has the same perception of a matter and you are the only one that disagrees, then most likely your perception is wrong. Guys, most major media outlets (FoxSports, ESPN, NY Times, Finebaum, etc.), every fanbase, and most college AD’s are of the opinion that Auburn cheated and that the NCAA will bust them. The only group that disagree are Auburn fans, Phillip Marshall, Jeffrey Lee, Al Del Greco, and Justin Hokenson- all Auburn outlets.

I guess we’ll find out of this is a rare exception to the rule.

Reply
Jacktherabbit 03/16/2011 at 12:02 am

Rare exception to the rule? Having a different perception doesn’t make you wrong or right. It makes you different. Just like Bama fans are the only ones after the Toomer’s tree poisoning that still don’t think their national perception is that of the most delusional irrational fan-base in college football.

To objectively qualify going with or against popular thought by saying it’s right or wrong isn’t a valid argument. Perception, in most cases is important, but it’s not redemptive. Only the truth can do that.

Reply
Paratiger 03/17/2011 at 12:58 pm

By that logic, is it the same that the entire country views alabama fans as crazy considering that they made up 5 National Championships. I say “made up” because FoxSports, ESPN, NY Times, CBS, etc. all say that alabama only has 7 NC’s and the only ones that think different is bama fans.

You better add the President of the NCAA to that list of Auburn folks since he’s the one that has stated on multiple occasions that Auburn has done nothing wrong. He’s also Lil’ Nicky’s best good buddy. I find it interesting that Lil’ Nicky hasn’t said anything about Auburn. He knows he has had his little behind spanked fair and square. The sooner you accept that Auburn is a good program that is headed toward great, the sooner you can catch back up through hard work. It’s in the Auburn Creed in case you don’t know what that is.

What you don’t get is that everyone at ESPN already believes that Cam was bought. They know Megan Mullins and know that she’s the source in Joe Shad’s famous “the money was too good” story. Do you know who the author of the famous asterisk’s term is? An ESPN writer. Finebaum doesn’t need to influence anyone- they already believe Auburn is guilty. Based on your logic we’re living on a flat planet that the sun revolves around.

Jealousy over Auburn 1-upping bama’s return to glory in 2009 doesn’t equal some kind of conspiracy. Maybe if through all this Auburn had actually been accused of something by someone with some authority I’d be a bit worried.

Bama had a chance to ruin this season, but now they want the NCAA to do what they couldn’t with all those superstars, the second greatest coach ever, and a 24 point lead at home. Bama, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Alabama is always going to think Auburn is cheating and vice versa. Disregard what Bammers think, they have no objectivity whatsoever. The people you need to be worried about believing you’re in trouble are Chris Lowe, Joe Shadd, Scott Van Pelt, Collin Cowherd, Brooks, Thayer Evans, Pat Thamel, Bruce Feldman, Paul Finebaum, and Charles Robinson. Even Lars Anderson is now suspicious.

Key word in that reply….THINK

They think that Auburn will eventually get popped for the Cam Newton Scandal. Which is surprising really because they seem to be negating everything the NCAA has come out and said on 3 seperate occasions. Which is that there is no evidence that Auburn did anything wrong and even did everything needed prior to the season to make sure that Cam would be eligible. Thats why Cam was re-instated so quickly during the season. You can Think this is another USC case that will take time to come around if you’d like but if it never does then you will be next to Chris Lowe, Joe Shadd, Scott Van Pelt, Collin Cowherd, Brooks, Thayer Evans, Pat Thamel, Bruce Feldman, Paul Finebaum, and Charles Robinson when the eggs start flying. Am I nieve enough to say it didn’t happen, NO. But on that same note am I just gonna jump to the same conclusion as “The rest of the media world” without any REAL EVIDENCE, NO! Only time will tell…… Meanwhile bammers will continue to stir this pot as long as they can hoping to generate as much problems as they possibly can for the Auburn program. The haters will always hate.

The issue is that Asterisk U and it’s fans have such a little brother syndrome, they will do anything to try and catch up. Hence the “All IN” and “Family” mantra’s as of late.

You won’t convince any Auburn fan that you’re not jealous. Especially since you are constantly over on Auburn blogs spouting off about imaginary sanctions. Alabama fans cannot handle the fact that we’ve been the dominant program for the past 3 decades, and need to make up rumors about bank cards, assistant coaches, and FBI investigations to help themselves feel better about that fact. Absolutely nothing will happen to Auburn concerning Cam Newton, but years from now you’ll still be mumbling about ‘asterisks’ because you can’t handle it. Every time you rant on this Auburn site, you still look like a jealous child. Give it up and go home. I’m no doctor, but it seems to me like you have the bad case of little brother syndrome.

Haha! Seems like Paul is eating Auburn’s lunch. Paul wants to be on the right side of this thing when Auburn gets the deaqth penalty.

Well I find his comparison of Bama to Apple and Auburn to a Ponzi scheme rather funny seeing that Tim Cook, an Auburn grad, runs Apple during Jobs’ increasing absences, where as the most notorious recent Ponzi scheme was dreamed up by Bernie Madoff, who attended Bama, but never graduated.

How in two years has Auburn changed gears and turned our program around quickly? The answer to this question is not as simple as “cutting corners” or anything that Finebaum suggested. He mentioned successful businesses. What do businesses usually do when they are unsuccessful? Go out and hire the best and the brightest in their field. This is exactly what Auburn did. Coach Chizik is a phenomenal manager of his staff and players, he may not be the Jesus of college football coaching as Mr. Finebaum suggests Satan I mean Saban is… And the most important hire of this “business decision” was Gus Malzhan, who in two years of being Auburn’s OC (with both his recruited style of players (2011) and without(2010)) has been very successful and has left “defensive coaching genius” (Saban) scratching his head and fuming on the sidelines TWO YEARS IN A ROW. So one can argue back and forth all day about whether we (Auburn) “cut corners” because so far there is no concrete proof, but the real answer to Mr. Finebaum’s question is that Auburn merely made better “business” decisions that have produced results quickly rather than over a long period of time, so “at the end of the day” RIGHT NOW Auburn is the better business. There is only one team in the state of Alabama which is currently eligible for the death penalty. And that team is in Tuscaloosa.

What a bunch of dummies. You don’t remember $20 trooper getting the barn on probation for little kitty weekend?

Doesn’t Nick Saban have a losing record vs. Auburn?

How many times has Auburn ever out-recruited Bama? So if Auburn has a winning record vs Bama since Bear died, yet Bama out-recruits Auburn every year, then maybe Auburn has a better plan and is better coached, right?

What I really like though is that Auburn proudly plays black QBs. Black QBs are loved and part of the family at AU, but I don’t think Cam Newton would ever have had an opportunity to play at Bama. Maybe we can ask Andrew Zow how he felt.

I think it bothers some Bama fans that a black QB led to the Tigers to victory in Tuscaloosa when their white Rhodes Scholar just couldn’t get the job done.

Does it bother you Bama fans to be beaten by a black QB from Auburn? Does it stoke your racist cracker fire when a black QB from Auburn is dancing and smiling on your sidelines? You know it burns you up. Admit it. You’d rather lose with a whitey than win with Cam.

I like the fact that Auburn is integrated and we actually love black QBs. I like knowing the greatest college QB ever is a black guy from Auburn.

And I love the fact that Cam Newton is going to be a cash money millionaire in the NFL and redneck Bama fans can’t do a damned thing about it. I hope he goes to the Cowboys so Greg McIlroy’s dad can kiss his ass.

Hey Bama – Cam and Cecil beat you crackers down. And when the NFL draft hits, we’ll see that in the real world Cam Newton will be worth five times what Nick Saban is worth.

Now go home and count championships.

Actually I feel a little better now, because after seeing how two-faced Finebaum is, I know that if he had any evidence, tapes or whatever, I think he would have tried to hose Auburn before the Iron Bowl. We’re in the clear.

I’d like to know if he and Cecil Hurt kicked the rumors up the the NYT.

Also, doesn’t Nick Saban have a losing record vs. Auburn? How is that possible if his system is better?

Doesn’t Bama out-recruit (supposedly) Auburn every year? So how can Auburn have a better record since Da Bahr died? If Auburn wins more with less talent, Auburn must be better coached… our plan is more effective.

One thing that makes me feel really good is knowing that in a few weeks Cam Newton will have an NFL salary and we’ll see that the free market values Cam Newton at about 4X the worth of Nick Saban. I like knowing that Cam Newton is worth more than Nick Saban. That makes me feel good.

I like knowing that a black QB from Auburn not only is the best QB ever to play the game, but he led us into Bryant Tuberville Stadium and put a beat-down on their white Rhodes Scholar. Does it bother you Bama fans for a black QB from Auburn to smile and dance on your sidelines? Do you feel the redneck racist hatred and anger in your gut?

And I really hope Cam Newton goes to the Dallas Cowboys so Greg McIlroy’s dad will have to kiss his ass for a living.

Now, why don’t you Bama fans run home and count championships.

People will look back years from now and know 2 things:

Auburn peaked in 2010, and they had to cheat in order to get there.

Finebaum acts like he doesn’t know a thing about Gene Chizik. I didn’t know that much about Chizik prior to him being named the Head Coach, but since then I have learned that Chizik is a no-nonsense guy and works 10 times harder than Tuberville ever did. Plus Finebaum kept on saying “which team DID IT RIGHT”? Really?? bama “did it right”?? Finebaum has no problem making accusations about Auburn (with not a thing to back it up), but he totally ignores the NUMEROUS issues that plagued the first few years of Saban’s recruiting at alabama. Another poster talked about Mr. Anderson from Athens, and tried to say he was an Auburn booster. Nothing could be further from the truth – Mr. Anderson has a son that attends (or did attend) AU, but Anderson said he’s not a football fan at all. Plus I believe it was revealed that Anderson’s business partner IS a big-time bama fan. Since Finebaum is so in love with Nick Saban, he had no interest in investigating the mysterious “fishing trip” that Anderson went on with Julio Jones and Mark Ingram. And of course Finebaum didn’t even mention that event during the recorded speech. How ironic would it be if Auburn was 100% innocent in the Cam Newton case, but bama had won the 2009 BCS Title with 2 key players who actually should be have been ineligible?

Oh yeah, another thing that’s hilarious about Finebaum’s man-love for Saban: is “doing it the right way” also in effect when Saban intentionally over-signs by 6-8 players every year? And let’s make no mistake about it, Saban’s over-signing has a lot to do with the perception that bama’s recruiting classes are so outstanding. But yeah, I guess “doing it the right way” includes telling a kid with a dinged-up knee that he needs to take a medical redshirt “for the good of the team”. You can bet your butt that the NCAA will add yet another rule that is specifically aimed at Saban’s shady practice of signing too many players and then in essence having them try out for the team as Freshmen and Sophomores.

Is he actually saying this? Is this not pathetic or what? I wonder if Finebaum is loosing it? His call in show is pathetic also, just bunch of people ranting and trashing.

This is the same Finebaum that said he never called Auburn racist (although he went on national television and said that Auburn has a “plantation mentality”), and he said he has never said anything derogatory about Auburn (although he wrote a book called “I Hate Auburn 303 reasons why you should too”)… what a lying scumbag!

Finebaum is such an idiot. He’s a journalist and journalists are supposed to be unbiased. He obviously is quite the opposite. Why do Tide fans have such little class, or no class at all? I mean really, when they’re not busy bragging about their imaginary 13 titles, they’re slandering Auburn, trying to discredit our achievements. It’s not the Crimson Tide I can’t stand, it’s their fans, and Finebaum gives them a far reaching voice. If not for his ignorant rants, the Tide talk would be confined to trailer parks and meth labs. I’ve likened Auburn v.s. Alabama to Israel v.s. Palestine…two nations, one land, eternal war. We choose to turn the other cheek and improve and enrich our history and programs, while they resort to a mindless ‘stuck in the past’ mentality and banter while unleashing their dirty bombs a.k.a. slander and rumors on our program. Don’t worry AUFamily. The Tide and their voice, Mr. Finebaum, will continue to be miserable as our team and program continue to excel
